Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)
Children’s National Medical Center aims to ensure the health and safety of all personnel working with biohazardous agents. The IBC assures that research conducted at the institution is in compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules. We strive to minimize all recognizable hazards and to comply with all federal and state laws and regulations.
The IBC is a committee established to review and approve the use of recombinant DNA, pathogens, and select agents. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has published NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has published Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL). The committee sets containment levels in accordance with these documents.
All principal investigators, whether Children’s employees engaged in research or non-hospital employees working on Children’s property, are required to submit a research protocol if their work involves the use of recombinant DNA and/or biohazardous materials.
