Health services volunteers with the following credentials in the state where they are volunteering:
- physicians
- nurses (Registered, Licensed Practical, and Licensed Vocational)
- physician assistants
- EMT, paramedics or allied health professionals:
- nurses aides
- home health aides
- certified nursing assistant
- personal care attendants;
- certified first aid trained volunteers
- student nurses may also volunteer
Disaster mental health activity volunteers with the following credentials in the state where they are volunteering:
- licensed mental health professionals including counselors
- marriage and family therapists
- psychiatrists
- psychologists
- registered nurses with documented psychiatric training and experience
- social workers

According to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief website, all volunteers must:
- Participate in Red Cross provided training in one or more specialty areas of service
- Be prepared to deploy when requested
- Participate in at least one annual disaster drill for the volunteer's specific unit
- Participate in an online national criminal background check
Additionally, they may be asked to:
- Stand ready for on-site training to take on additional roles
- Consider participating in non-disaster volunteer opportunities in the chapter

Volunteers may take as many trainings (in addition to the requirements) at no cost.

| Medical Reserve Corps |
Volunteers needed:
- practicing, retired, employed medical professionals
- physicians (including surgeons, medical specialists, osteopaths)
- physician assistants
- nurses (nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants)
- pharmacists
- dentists
- dental assistants
- optometrists
- emergency medical technicians
- public health workers
- epidemiologists
- infectious disease specialists
- toxicologists
- mental health practitioners (psychologists, substance abuse counselors, social workers)
- health educators/communicators
- other medical and public health professionals

According to the Medical Reserve Corps' website, all volunteers must:
- sign up with the state's Emergency System for Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals
- meet core competencies, which are currently being established and will vary locally
- undergo a background check
- undergo a medical exam
- need approval from their Unit Leaders (MRC Units can be started or joined with the leader's permission)
- have credentials verified
- United States citizenship is not required.
