Idaho Disaster Volunteer Opportunities

Organization Name Types of Volunteers Needed Volunteer Requirments Supplemental Information

American Red Cross

Health services volunteers with the following credentials in the state where they are volunteering:

  • physicians
  • nurses (Registered, Licensed Practical, and Licensed Vocational)
  • physician assistant
  • emergency medical technician
  • paramedics or allied health professionals
  • nurses aides
  • home health aides
  • certified nursing assistant
  • personal care attendants
  • certified first aid trained volunteers
  • student nurses

Disaster mental health activity volunteers with the following credentials in the state where they are volunteering:

  • licensed mental health
  • professionals including
  • counselors
  • marriage and family therapists
  • psychiatrists
  • psychologists
  • registered nurses with documented psychiatric training and experience
  • social workers

According to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief website, all volunteers must:

  • participate in Red Cross provided training in one or more specialty areas of service
  • be prepared to deploy when requested
  • participate in at least one annual disaster drill for the volunteer's specific unit
  • participate in an online national criminal background check, either when they volunteer or at the time of deployment.

Additionally, they may be asked to:
  • stand ready for on-site training to take on additional roles
  • consider participating in non-disaster volunteer opportunities in the chapter

Disaster Psychiatry Outreach

Volunteers needed:

  • psychiatrists who are credentialed and trained by DPO

Types of care that DPO voluteers provide include: emergency assessments, short-term pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments, and referreals to long-term care through the existing mental health system.
Medical Reserve Corps

Volunteers needed:

  • practicing, retired, employed medical professionals
  • public health professionals
  • community members without medical training can assist with support functions
  • physicians (including surgeons, medical specialists, osteopaths)
  • physician assistants
  • nurses (nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants)
  • pharmacists
  • dentists/dental assistants
  • optometrists
  • veterinarians
  • emergency medical technicians
  • public health workers
  • epidemiologists
  • infectious disease specialists
  • toxicologists
  • mental health practitioners (psychologists, substance abuse counselors, social workers)
  • health educators/communicators

According to the Medical Reserve Corps' website, all volunteers must: 

  • meet core competencies, which are currently being established and will vary locally
  • undergo a background check and a medical exam
  • have credentials verified

Volunteers will also need approval from their Unit Leaders (MRC Units can be started or joined with the leader's permission)

United States citizenship is not required.

According to the U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, all volunteers must:

  • be a U.S. citizen
  • be less than 44 years of age
  • be medically qualified
  • have a current, unrestricted professional license (if applicable)
    have a qualifying degree or a higher degree from an accredited institution (varies depending on occupation)
